What is green building?
According to Wikipedia, “Green building (also known as green construction or sustainable building) refers to both a structure and the using of processes that are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a building’s life-cycle: from siting to design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation, and demolition.”
Jernigan Homes strives to build green by building by the following principles:
- Use materials efficiently
- Minimize waste to the landfill
- Insulate well
- Seal homes effectively
- Ventilate properly
- Size heating and air conditioning equipment appropriately
- Drain water away from the home
- Flash and seal windows and wall lines to prevent water damage
- Use good windows
With the combination of these principles, Jernigan Homes is able to build a custom home that will live comfortably and last a long time, while minimizing power bills.
Jernigan Homes uses a third party energy rater and tester on every home to make sure we are putting these principles into place properly. While we have done well in the area of green building and energy efficiency, we are ever learning and ever improving.
